Dialogues Across Differences (May 22nd and June 13th)

The word “polarized” ought to be retired. It’s been used for years to describe the state of American conversation about a lot of different things. One side thinks one way, the other side thinks another way, and in between is a gap that cannot be bridged.

We have an opportunity to learn how to begin addressing that gap through a program called “Dialogues Across Differences.” It’s just what the title says: being able to speak respectfully with those whose beliefs differ from our own. JAC Patrissi is a consultant in Ware who has received funding from the Mass. Department of Health to lead workshops teaching these skills, and it will be provided to the church at no charge. (Rev. Bruce: I have utmost regard for JAC Patrissi, having worked with her around issues of domestic violence.)

This will be helpful for us as a church community, given that there is a spectrum of perspectives within the church. It will also reflect well on the church for us to be an example of connecting people to each other in conversation instead of simply surrendering to polarization and silence. Further, these are skills that will transfer beyond the congregation to our families, places of work, and so on.

“Dialogues Across Differences” is not about changing someone’s mind, criticizing their beliefs, or belittling them. It is about learning how to listen well to someone with whom we may disagree, and it is about learning how to express ourselves in ways that promote conversation rather than cutting it off. It’s not about what your beliefs are. It’s about how to communicate across differences.

We will be having two three-hour sessions for anyone who would like to participate. Attendance at both is important. Nine members of the Executive Council have indicated that they will be participating. We will be holding it in person at the church, not by Zoom.

We on the Executive Council hope that you will give this very serious consideration and decide to participate. We believe that it is an expression of our faith in Christ to seek ways to reach out to others that reflect God’s love for each one of us.

Meeting times are Saturday, May 22-9:00 a.m.-12 noon and Sunday June 13, 11:30 a.m-2:30 p.m. Sign up instructions will be included in the next Arrow.
