Missions is collecting new underwear, socks and T-shirts for distribution to the homeless and those who seek shelter at the Springfield Rescue Mission. According to Barbara Brizzolari, Rescue Mission Event coordinator, “very often spiritual healing begins with physical needs being met.” Undie Sunday is an outreach program started more than 2 decades ago by a local attorney who had lost everything to drinking and walked into the Rescue Mission one day seeking a place to shower. As he showered, staff replaced his clothes with new underwear, T-shirt and socks as well as gently used, clean clothing.
A couple of years later, the Rescue Mission received a letter with a donation check inside. It was from the same man who sought and received their help. After relocating to the Midwest, he got his life back on track, established a law firm and received a check from a settlement case which he donated to the Rescue Mission with instructions to buy new underwear for people. SRM is asking local churches and businesses to donate men’s boxer briefs, in all sizes; T-shirts in large, X-large and XXL as well as some 3XL and 4XL; ladies’ underwear sizes 6-10; and socks for adults and children. Donations will be accepted through the end of January. A box is on the back table of the Norman Room.
