Our first outreach project (since our meeting with Rev. Beverly Prestwood-Taylor in March) took place over the summer at the Palmer Public Library Summer Lunch Program. It was for families with children under the age of 18, and was offered Monday-Friday for six weeks. Several of us assisted in cleaning before and after the lunch as well as monitoring the meal as it was going on. For some of the meals, Cliff Haendiges drove to Monson to pick up the pre-packaged meals.
For church folks, it was a great way to participate in the broader Palmer community as a positive presence, and it was fun to hang out with each other as well. We wore the green aprons from the Lenten Luncheons, and we had nametags and signs that displayed Second Congregational Church on them by name and picture.
We had enough people interested in this outreach project to staff the lunches for two days each week for the entire run of the program. We often saw friends and neighbors enjoying the program together as families. It was enjoyable to interact with families that were having so much summer fun!
Thank you to the many people who made this work so well, and who represented our church so wonderfully! We’re looking forward to what’s next!
